Purpose
The Needles and Hooks group at Saint Francis UMC creates knit and crochet gifts for needy people around the world and in our own community. We currently have 4 organizations that we donate our completed projects to: Knit for Kids (children's sweaters), Hospice of Wake County (lap blankets and shawls), 1st Baptist of Raleigh Clothing Ministry (baby items), and Rex Cancer Center of Raleigh (hats). See below for more information about these organizations and our projects for them.
Beginner and experienced knitters and crocheters are welcome.
- Have questions about a current project you are working on? Come, socialize, and get answers!
- Not
able to crochet or knit but want to learn? This is the place to
start!! We are an easy-going, flexible bunch! Many of our knitters
and crocheters have never held a needle or hook before attending their
first meeting. But they are now stitching up a storm! Your very first
practice square will end up in a group lap blanket project!
Meetings
The Needles and Hooks group meets from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month in room 312.
- Not able to be there for the entire two hours? Drop in for any of the time you are able.
- Not able to attend on Thursdays but want to participate and to use the yarn we have? Please let us know. We will find a way to make sure the yarn finds its way to your hooks.
- Not able to crochet or knit but want to help? Donations for the purchase of yarn are always needed.
For more information or to be added to the Needles and Hooks email distribution list to receive reminders about the meetings and other activities, see Cookie or Cortney Baker or email them at:

The Organizations We Support
-
Knit for Kids: The Needles and Hooks group is one of many around the world that sends sweaters to the
Knit for Kids World Vision organization to be distributed throughout
the world to needy children. The T-sweater pattern we use was
specifically designed for this mission, originally published in the Guideposts magazine back in 1996, and is now posted on their website at http://www.knitforkids.org.
-
Hospice of Wake County: They have an ongoing need for shawls or lap blankets. They place one in each patient room and describe them as a "hug", The patients love them! The families may keep them as beautiful reminders of
their loved ones. Their web site is http://www.hospiceofwake.org.
-
1st Baptist of Raleigh Clothing Ministry: They have a need for baby items. They have had handmade baby items in the past and
they go quickly! Their web site is http://www.fbcraleigh.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=57&Itemid=181
- Rex Cancer Center of Raleigh: They have an ongoing need for hats to distribute to their adult patients. Their web site is http://www.rexhealth.com/Services_and_Wellness/Index_of_Services/Cancer_Center/
In addition to these organizations, we make other items to sell at St. Francis' annual Gifts of Grace Marketplace. Proceeds from this sale benefit the St. Francis Emergency Assistance Fund.
