Disaster Response

Be the hands of Christ offering help to disaster survivors! It is a great opportunity for a short-term mission experience.

Covenant of serving

When we serve others, we serve in the name of Jesus Christ, as a physical representation of the Body of Christ. As team members share the love of Jesus Christ, both in the local church and int he mission field, they represent Christ's present in the place where they serve. We become the "hands of Christ" at work in the world.

Team orientation meeting

Each team meets to plan their travel and food arrangements sometime during the week before they leave. All participants should be at this gathering as the team will make decisions about the trip.

Team member qualities

  • Christ-centered life
  • Commitment to the mission work of the church, to orientation and training
  • Willingness to follow guidance of the team leader
  • Flexibility and openness to other ways of worship, service and culture
  • Willingness to serve in friendship and mutuality with the host, host church and community
  • A cooperative and courteous way of relating to others
  • An enthusiastic and positive attitude.
  • Willingness to be a listener, to offer compassion to those who are hurting … your actions may be the only "Bible" some people see.

 Team member responsibilities

  • Respect and support the leaders; ask before acting and think team, not self.
  • Accept financial responsibility for participation in the mission.
  • Do not give gifts, especially to children unless you can give to all equally.
  • Abstain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs and profanity from the time of departure until the return home. The impression volunteers give to the community affects the Christian witness of the mission.
  • Be modest in the clothing you wear; inappropriate clothing is offensive in some cultures.
  • Pack lightly; you must carry what you bring.
  • Be responsible for your belongings. Be very careful with your luggage, purse, money and all personal belongings.
  • Follow all health and safety precautions.
  • Be willing to share with others by offering/leading devotional time.
  • Recognize your personal limitations and share that with the team leader; do not over-extend your physical or emotional capabilities to the extent that you are harmed.
  • Refrain from negative talk or quickly assessing judgment; be the hands of Christ, offered in love.
  • Rejoice in the Lord!
