Disciple Bible Study
Intensive Bible Study and Discipleship training programs are offered by the staff throughout the year. Disciple I, II, and III are 34-week intensive Bible studies designed to deepen your relationship with the living Christ. Advent and Lent always feature small group experiences concerned with the spiritual life of Saint Francis Church. Look for details of seasonal Bible Studies, and opportunities for ongoing Bible Study in the bulletin, and in our newsletter, The Franciscan. You can also learn more about Disciple at the Cokesbury Disciple Web page or Disciple Bible Outreach Ministries, which is a collaborative ministry of the Western North Carolina and North Carolina Conferences of The United Methodist Church.
Lectionary Bible Study
Join the pastors for Communion at 9:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary, followed by Lectionary Bible Study in the Gathering Space at 10:00 a.m. This is a lively discussion using the current lectionary readings, which can be found online at The Text This Week. Lunch usually follows morning study, so come and plan to stay awhile!
Youth Bible Study
Take a break in the middle of your week! Every Wednesday, the youth of Saint Francis come together in the Gathering Space to share what’s going on in our lives and pray together. Then, we divide into Middle School and Senior High groups to explore the Bible. There’s no better way to learn about who God is and who God wants us to be. Come at 6.30 p.m. for prayer and stay till 8:00 p.m. You are always welcome.
Following Jesus Bible Study
The Following Jesus Bible study is a small study group that meets weekly and is facilitated by Bob Wallace. The group does various studies throughout the year. They have studied current books, in-depth studies of books of the Bible and seasonal studies. They are an open group and invite others to meet on Thursday evenings at the church at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome. For questions please contact Bob Wallace.
Efird Bible Studies
The Bible is the foundation upon which we build our Christian faith. It is where we discover the true nature of God, learn about God at work through history, and understand God's desire to be in relationship with us. But we need an expert guide to help us in unlocking the richness of the scriptures. For over 45 years Dr. James "Mickey" Efird has been that guide for thousands of pastors and Christians seeking to grow in their faith through Bible Study, both as a Professor at Duke Divinity School and through conducting hundreds of Bible studies in churches throughout North Carolina. Dr. Efird helps us to understand the original context of the writing as well as how we can apply the teachings today.
Efird Bible Studies are unique in that each study contains a complete book of the Old or New Testament, filmed in a church in front of live audiences. These high-quality DVD videos have been lightly edited into twenty-minute sessions, an ideal length for Sunday School classes or small group study. A Participant Workbook accompanies each study and contains key points of Dr. Efird's teaching and a set of thought-provoking questions sure to start group discussion.
These studies, now being taught in 1300 churches across the U.S., started here at SFUMC and you might watch carefully to see familiar faces. For more information, including a list of studies available, visit the Efird Bible Studies website.
To learn more about how you can initiate an Efird Bible Study in your small group or to learn when the next weekly classes will be offered contact Claire Cox-Woodlief.
Christian Believer Bible Study
Why do we believe what we believe? Why do we confess God as Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth? From whom do our understandings of the faith come? Why does this matter to me? If you have questions about the faith that you suspect could be explored to a greater understanding, Christian Believer is a study for you! In a similar format to Disciple Bible Study, Christian Believer examines the classical doctrines of the church, emphasizing the relationship of worship, belief and daily life. Contact the Rev. Tom Hollis if interested.
Table Time/Lectio Divina
Tuesdays at noon in the Sanctuary. This intimate fellowship begins with Holy Communion, and then moves to the ancient practice of Lectio Divina, a slow, meditative reading of the Psalms followed by spiritual journaling and sharing.
Mom Bible Study
This group meets once a month on the second Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. and is primarily moms of preschoolers. Meetings are focused on prayer, support, and study. The group started their study with the book What Ever Mom Needs to Know, and continues to use similar materials. The group also helps with the annual Easter Egg Hunt and has helped raise support for Interact of Wake County during the holiday season. All are welcome to the group and if you have questions please contact Sara Thompson.
